FALL 2004
WELCOME TO (OR BACK TO) RUTGERS, CAMDEN CAMPUS!
The staff of Camden Computing Services wants to take this opportunity to first
wish you an enjoyable and productive academic year.
INFORMATION FOR EVERYONE:
* New Organization - On April 23, 2004, the following was announced by Executive Vice President Karen Kavanagh, "I am happy to announce that, following an extensive search process, Michael V. McKay, Executive Director for Computing and Information Technology, has been appointed Vice President for Information Technology." Following this announcement a new university organization was established under VP McKay, and is called the Office of Information Technology (OIT). The organization previously known as RUCS (Rutgers University Computing Services) is being redefined and reorganized into new divisions within the Office of Information Technology. Camden Computing Services will remain the name of the Camden division of OIT, and our correspondence, web presence and communications will no longer include the "RUCS" label. We are excited about the new structure and the expectations that OIT will improve services to the university.
* NetID Required - To access most computing services at Rutgers, you will need a NetID,
which provides secure access to email, web pages, computer labs
on all Rutgers campuses, the Rutgers network, and the Internet. The
NetID is required for online student services including registration,
personalized course schedules, statement of financial accounts and
online credit card payment, grades, and transcripts; and for online
faculty/staff services including grade rosters, online calendaring,
faculty survey, course analysis, course synopses, and grade submission.
The list below provides information on what's new this fall in computing
on the Camden campus. For more details on these and all of our
services, please go to our web site at: http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/
[Faculty/staff Note: Please consult your departmental computer support
person before making any changes to your office computer]
* Computer viruses are prevalent on the Internet. Protect and secure
your computer by keeping it up-to-date with anti-virus software and
operating system patches. We recommend using RADS (Rutgers Antivirus
Delivery System) as your anti-virus software since it automatically
updates Trend Micro Antivirus software for you. RADS is free to Rutgers
University faculty, staff, and students. You can obtain Microsoft
operating system patches at: http://www.windowsupdate.com.
For more information, go to http://mssg.rutgers.edu/software/portal.
* All Rutgers faculty, students, and staff are required to have a NetID and a valid e-mail address in the Rutgers On-line Directory. Please visit http://rucs.rutgers.edu/netid-policy.html for more information and find links to update your record.
NEW ITEMS FOR STUDENTS:
* The Guide to Student Computing 2004-2005 is online at http://rucs.rutgers.edu/studentguide.pdf. You can also pick up a copy at any of the public computing labs on the campus:
http://www.camden.rutgers.edu/RUCS-Camden/hours.html
* A new personal, customizable, web-based informational portal to Rutgers University is just a click away. The portal provides a single access point and sign on to an ever increasing number of Rutgers applications. Go to http://my.rutgers.edu for more information.
* As part of the normal planning process for lab equipment and in response to the requests from students who attended the campus student retreat in the spring, all laser printers in the public computing labs were upgraded this summer as well as additional printers placed into the two highest capacity labs (BSB 109 and CC). The new HP LaserJet 4300 printers bring an increase in speed of printing (over twice as fast as the older units) as well as the added quantity. We anticipate these additions should make printing more available for students throughout the year.
* Wireless access on the campus was expanded to now include the lobbies of Armitage Hall and Business & Science building along with additional areas in the outside quad on the campus. More information on wireless locations and how to access is found at:
http://www.camden.rutgers.edu/RUCS-Camden/S50-4320_wireless.html
* Color printing will be made available in three locations starting this fall. Final preparations and testing are being completed to put into production color laserjet printing in the Campus Center lab, Business and Science building lab (room 132), and in the Law building (outside room 203). A $.50 per page charge will be payable through your RUConnection card for all printed pages.
* This summer again saw the upgrade of approximately one-third of the public lab systems on the campus. New Dell Pentium 4/ 3 Ghz systems were installed in BSB 108-110, BSB 132, and in the Housing apartment lab. Additionally, through fund sharing with other campus departments, equipment was replaced in the Honors facility and a second lab is scheduled to be opened on the 3rd floor of the Towers in Housing. The Macs in BSB 110 will be replaced later in the fall semester due to the delay of availability from Apple. Responses from the student retreat were instrumental in the replacement of 13 Unix workstations with 13 Dell PCs in BSB 132 to expand the number of Windows systems in the labs. Also, MS Office 2003 became the standard office suite to be offered on the PCs. The scanners in the labs were replaced with HP 5550C scanners. A new gigabit backbone was installed between central servers to increase inter server communications and to offload backup services to improve performance to both "back end" functions and response time to client systems in the labs. The main unix server, named clam, was replaced this summer to take on the new role of not only providing the majority of student unix services to the campus, but also, to provide the High Performance computing service (this service will be moved onto clam during the fall).
* Were you thinking of setting up wireless access in your dorm room? If so, please go to https://resnet.rutgers.edu/wireless.php for recommendations to help you define a secure installation and operation.
* Two of the campus computing labs (BSB 108-110, 132 and the Campus Center) were placed behind firewalls to help protect the computers and your access to services and the Internet. This action should help reduce attacks while you are completing your tasks in the labs.
NEW ITEMS FOR FACULTY AND STAFF:
* Are you interested in the integration of technology into your classroom presentations? A new initiative through OIT, called the Undergraduate Instructional and Research Initiative, is being lead centrally by Dr. Charles Hedrick and in Camden by Dr. Nancy Rosoff. The kickoff meeting to discuss present status and obtain input from interested faculty is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 7 in BSB 231. Information was previously emailed to all campus faculty on Sept. 23.
* Seven additional smart classrooms were added in Armitage and Fine Arts buildings over the summer and will be receiving full support from Computing Services for equipment and software problems encountered. Additionally, final plans have been developed for the installation of equipment in the Gordon Theater. This work resulted from successful cooperation with the FAS CIT group. This brings the total smart classrooms to 41 now. ^^ Please be aware that authentication (logging in with a netid/password) is required in all smart classrooms and open data jacks on the Camden campus.
HELP:
* Walk in (BSB 109 & 132; CC 017), phone in (856/225-6274), and email (help@camden.rutgers.edu) Help Desks along with online web page instructions at: http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu
