FALL 2006
WELCOME TO (OR BACK TO) RUTGERS, CAMDEN CAMPUS!
The staff of Camden Computing Services wants to take this opportunity to first
wish you an enjoyable and productive academic year.
INFORMATION FOR EVERYONE:
The list below provides information on what's new this fall in computing
on the Camden campus. For more details on these and all of our
services, please go to our web site at: http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/
[Faculty/staff Note: Please consult your departmental computer support
person before attempting to make any changes to your office computer]
* Computer viruses continue to be prevalent on the Internet. On the security front, you should now know that Rutgers changed their
antivirus software site license from using McAfee to Trend Micro in order to provide better virus detection and protection at a lower cost
to the university. Along with that, Camden Computing
Services has developed a PC Cleaner CD that can be used to
fix many virus/worm corruption problems. For a copy of that
CD, please see any consultant at the help desks in the campus
computing labs. Protect and secure
your computer by keeping it up-to-date with antivirus software and
operating system patches. We recommend using RADS (Rutgers Antivirus
Delivery System) as your antivirus software since it automatically
updates Trend Micro Antivirus software for you. RADS is free to Rutgers
University faculty, staff, and students. You can obtain Microsoft
operating system patches at: http://www.windowsupdate.com.
For more information, go to http://software.rutgers.edu/.
* The wireless network continued to expand. For those who bring their laptops to campus, 5 buildings have wireless
access available throughout, including Armitage Hall, Robeson Library, Law School, Campus Center and 319 Cooper. Limited access in the lobby areas exists in BSB and across some outside areas on campus. The two public labs in campus housing, also have wireless access located within the labs (but the rest of housing does not have wireless access, but instead rely on the data jacks by every bed). The wireless network in many of these locations was recently upgraded to the 802.11g standard, a major improvement in speed. For a list of all lab and all wireless locations on campus, please see: http://ruwireless.camden.rutgers.edu/
* Speaking of the network, the link between our campus and the N.B. campus and the Internet was upgraded recently to a pair of VON lines which gives the campus better redundancy in times of failure and overall larger thru-put (the 2 VON lines can carry 150 meg of data each).
* The Mozilla suite of software has
been decommission in the public labs on all PCs, Macs and Suns. This
software is no longer supported by the Mozilla group. Instead
newer supported software has been installed in its place,
including Firefox (web browser), Thunderbird (email) and a package called NVU for web page creation.
* Let us also point out that there are public computer labs in BSB (108, 109, 110, 132, and 133), the basement of the Campus
Center, and the Robeson Library (in the lobby area, as well as
inside the library you will find various systems). There
are also additional PCs located in the Language Lab in the
basement of Armitage hall that has limited access for
everyone. The Language Lab (Armitage B-2) has recently opened
up its doors, and although its primary purpose is to be used
by Foreign Language students, it will have 12 seats available to
the general public (Monday thru Friday) from 8am to 1pm, and
the lab will be open to everyone after 1pm. For information on lab locations and hours, please see:
http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/hours.php
* The central email systems for students and faculty/staff were upgraded to a cluster of several powerful systems, allowing us to provide
redundancy and faster email service. At the same time the file service
that holds people's email and disk space was upgraded as well.
Email was also enhanced with the decommissioning of the older and
less secure mail protocols imap/pop and replaced with secure versions that encrypt passwords and data over the network.
* Educational seminars on various computer topics are given every
semester by Camden Computing Services, and a list of such classes
can be found at http://edseries.camden.rutgers.edu
* NetID Required - To access most computing services at Rutgers, you will need a NetID and computer account, which provides secure access to email, web pages, computer labs on all Rutgers campuses, the Rutgers network, and the Internet. The NetID is required for online student services including registration, personalized course schedules, statement of financial accounts and online credit card payment, grades, and transcripts; and for online faculty/staff services including grade rosters, online calendaring, faculty survey, course analysis, course synopses, and grade submission.
* All Rutgers faculty, students, and staff are required to have a NetID and a valid e-mail address in the Rutgers On-line Directory. Please visit http://oit.rutgers.edu/netid-policy.html for more information and find links to update your record.
NEW ITEMS FOR STUDENTS:
* The personal, customizable, web-based informational portal to Rutgers University is just a click away. The portal provides a single access point and sign on to an ever increasing number of Rutgers applications. Go to http://my.rutgers.edu for more information.
* This summer again saw the upgrade of approximately one-third of the public lab systems on the campus. The PCs in the Campus Center public lab as well as in the Instructional lab in
BSB 117 were replaced with new Dell systems. A few additional PCs were also added to various labs, taking the place of a few less frequently used Macs and Sun systems.
These new PCs come with a 3.0 ghz cpu and 1 gig of RAM.
* Printer management software and the print servers were upgraded to
handle all wireless printing and PC/Mac/Unix printing in the public
labs on campus. The new hardware and software should allow more robust
print services, and the ability to monitor and control any abuse of printing. To conserve paper, duplex (double sided)
printing is available by default in the BSB 132 public lab, and can also be used as an option in any other lab. Color printing is available
in the Campus Center and BSB labs for a 25 cents per page fee
(payable through ones RUConnection card). Just see a lab consultant
in either location for assistance with any of the above.
* The Guide to Student Computing 2006-2007 is online at http://oit.rutgers.edu/studentguide.pdf. You can also pick up a copy at any of the public computing labs on the campus:
http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/hours.php
* Were you thinking of setting up wireless access in your dorm room? If so, please go to https://resnet.rutgers.edu/wireless.php for recommendations to help you define a secure installation and operation.
NEW ITEMS FOR FACULTY AND STAFF:
* The old majordomo mailing list package has been decommissioned this
summer and is replaced by a package serviced out of our New Brunswick
campus called Mailman. Mailman is to be used for any general
purpose list (what Majordomo and Listserv was used for in the past).
Information on Mailman can be found at: http://mailman.rutgers.edu.
Other will find RAMS a useful mailing service. Rams is meant
for mailing lists tied to class rosters or various pre defined
campus and university lists. See: http://rams.rutgers.edu for more information on RAMS.
* For those who access their class rosters online, they now include
the ability to see roster photos for the students in your class. If you want to match a face to a name, this addition to the class roster should meet your needs.
* For information on Smart Classrooms use for FAS and the Business
School faculty, see the updated web page at: http://smartclassrooms.camden.rutgers.edu/
* A test scanner to aid faculty in grading multiple choice
exams exists in BSB 132. Information on this scanning/grading device
can be found at: http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu/scanner/index.php
HELP:
* Walk in (BSB 109 & 132; CC 017), phone in (856/225-6274), and email (help@camden.rutgers.edu) Help Desks along with online web page instructions at: http://computing.camden.rutgers.edu
