Computing Services Information Document Email

General Information

This web area contains instructions for configuring popular email programs for use with Rutgers-Camden mail servers.
Students, faculty and staff of other Rutgers campuses should consult Computing Services on Your Campus for support.

These instructions assume that a working internet connection has already been established. For information on connecting to the internet, please see the home access web area or contact your ISP for more information.

Camden Computing Services highly recommends the use of IMAP, rather than POP. More information on the difference between the IMAP and POP email protocols is available here.

Users with a dedicated UCS/IT support staff should always consult with same before configuring email software at work or at home, especially since work settings may affect your home use of email (and vice-versa).
Existing POP email users that are considering switching to IMAP should DEFINITELY consult with departmental UCS/IT support staff before doing so!

Web Mail

The easiest way to read and send mail is directly via the web. See the main Rutgers Web Mail page for links to Web Mail systems available at any of the Rutgers campuses (including Camden). Web Mail can also be accessed through the myRutgers portal. The Camden Web Mail system can be accessed directly at http://webmail.camden.rutgers.edu

Web Mail is the best approach for users who do not receive a lot of email, or those who wish to avoid installing and setting-up a separate email program. It is also a useful tool for those who use different computers or travel often and need quick/easy access to email. Even users of other email programs will appreciate Web Mail's convenience when in a public lab or other location where other programs are not available (internet café, library, hotel or similar). Those who must, or wish to, use another email program (in addition to, or in place of Web Mail), can utilize the below instructions for their system/program. If you do not see your email program below, please contact help@camden.rutgers.edu for more information.

How about an "@rutgers.edu" email address?

In addition to campus-based email (netid@camden.rutgers.edu), you can also configure a netid@rutgers.edu or a firstname.lastname@rutgers.edu or similar email address on the University-wide RULink system. This server is maintained by Rutgers-New Brunswick and operates separately from the Rutgers-Camden email servers. This server also supports calendaring and a unified web client. For more information, please see the RULink web area.
