How do I connect to the wireless network on campus?
There are currently two groups operating wireless networks on the Camden campus: the Law School and Camden Computing Services. If you are in the East or West Law buildings, please visit the Law School's Intranet page for more information about their wireless network. Access to that part of the Law School site is restricted to faculty, staff, and students of that school.
Camden Computing Services operates wireless networks throughout much of the Camden campus. You can find coverage maps on the ruwireless.camden.rutgers.edu site. There is also additional technical information on that site about supported WiFi protocols, wireless printing, and issues related to laptop access to campus wireless.
Special Note for iPod, iPad, and iPhone Users
These devices, collectively referred to as iOS devices, have an auto-login feature that can cause problems on some protected wireless networks. Unfortunately the Camden campus' wireless network is among those that iOS auto-login has problems with. Below we describe two ways to get around the auto-login problem, one for devices using iOS 4 and another for those using iOS 3. Disabling auto-login for the OIT-Camden network is not the same as tapping Cancel on the auto-login screen that appears when your device first associates with a wireless network. Tapping Cancel will disconnect you from that wireless network.
In iOS version 4 and up, Apple has provided the option to turn off auto-login. After your iOS device has associated with the OIT-Camden wireless network:
- Tap the Settings icon
- Tap Wi-Fi OIT-Camden
- Tap the blue button with the white arrow next to OIT-Camden
- Toggle Auto-Login OFF for this network
Once you have followed these steps, you should be able to login using the mobile Safari browser.
If you have an iOS 3 device, there is a workaround for the auto-login problem that makes use of the free Boingo app. Apple maintains something called the Captive Network Support Exception list and the Boingo app is on this list. Running the Boingo app once while associated with the OIT-Camden wireless network causes iOS devices to exclude the campus wireless network from the auto-login process.
You won't have to run Boingo more than once to maintain this exception, but you must leave the app installed on your device. Deleting the app afterwards will re-enable auto-login with any known networks for which Boingo has blocked it. Install the Boingo app, then run it the next time your device associates with the OIT-Camden wireless network. Just let the app start, don't configure it, or enter any information for it. Once Boingo has started, press the home button to exit the app. That's all you have to do. Now you should be able to login to OIT-Camden wireless using the mobile Safari browser.
