Email at Rutgers-Camden

Introduction

Email services at Rutgers are divided into two tiers, basic and enterprise. Everyone at Rutgers can have a basic email account, which is created during NetID activation. Enterprise email systems include more than just email, and use special software or services such as Google, Zimbra, or Exchange. There may be restrictions on who can use a particular enterprise email service, and both the Zimbra (aka RUmail) and Exchange (aka camlink) services are non-free commercial software services. For more information about Google (aka ScarletMail), please visit the ScarletApps FAQ. For more information about Zimbra or Exchange, please contact your department’s IT support staff.

In Camden, we have one basic mail server for students and another for faculty & staff:

  • email.clam.rutgers.edu (for students)
  • email.crab.rutgers.edu (for faculty and staff)

Whether you are setting up an email program or a mobile device, one of the above servers will be both your incoming (IMAP) and outgoing (SMTP) server for basic email service.

In Camden, the default email address for students, faculty, and staff is ude.sregtur.nedmacnull@DIteN. In order to make use of this email address, you must have a computer account. NetID activation is handled by a central server located at:

If you can login to Rutgers web sites, but not to any Rutgers email services, you may have only activated your NetID.  It’s safe to run the account creation tool even if you have an account – it will just tell you that you already have one.  If you think you may have only activated your NetID then visit the netid.rutgers.edu site to make sure that you also have an account. You can also use the NetID web tools to create or modify a custom email address in both the @rutgers.edu and @camden.rutgers.edu mail domains.

Email Programs

Email programs that you can use to access your basic Rutgers-Camden email fall into three categories:

  • IMAP - you can learn more about these on our email configuration page.
  • Web Mail - we run a campus web mail server, and there is also web access to email through the myRutgers portal.
  • Terminal - we currently support one program for text-based email, called Pine.

In addition to the IMAP protocol we also support the POP protocol, but highly recommend that you use IMAP rather than POP whenever possible.  Rutgers only supports the secure versions of these protocols, so you may also see them referred to as IMAPS and POPS.

Regardless of the manner in which you access your basic Rutgers email account, please remember that your email storage shares disk space with your home directory (H drive).  You can learn more about your account’s network storage by reading our document on Managing your Storage Quota.

If you’d prefer to read email sent to your Rutgers-Camden address using a different account, you can also forward your email.
