General Information

This web page contains information on configuring some of the advanced features of the Mozilla Suite email program.
The primary instructions for configuring Mozilla are available here.
For general information on email at Rutgers, please visit the main email web page found here.

Remote/Server Folders vs. Local Folders

The main Mozilla instructions discuss using Mozilla's defaults for the "Copies & Folders" settings screen. The "Sent," "Drafts" and "Templates" folders, along with "Trash" and "Junk" (see below), are called special folders. You have the option of choosing different folders than the defaults (except for "Trash"). If you decide not to use the assumed names for folders, you would need to choose the Other: option, as per the following steps:
  1. Check the Place a copy in: box.
  2. As per the above, select the appropriate option.
  3. If using Other:, then click the pop-up menu to the right to select a folder by sliding to the right until the correct folder is found.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to use the "Drafts" (or "postponed-msgs" or similar) folder.
  5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to use the "Templates" (or similar) folder.
Here is a sample screenshot:

One benefit of using remote/server folders as special folders is the ability to see and access such folders/emails on other systems, including via Web Mail.

You also have the option of using the "Local Folders" list (stored and only available on your local computer system, rather than on the server) for these special folders. Simply use the appropriate pop-up menu(s) next to the selected option and select "Local Folders" or a folder from same, instead of remote/server folders on your "Rutgers-Camden" folder list. One benefit of this is that your storage capacity is only limited by your computer's hard drive, rather than your account quota.

While you do not have the option of turning off the "Drafts" and "Templates" folders completely (except by never saving a template or draft email), you can stop Mozilla from automatically saving a copy of every email sent by unchecking the Place a copy in: box. One drawback of this setting is the need to manually include your own email address in either the To:, Cc: or similar field(s) for any email for which you do want a copy saved. If you rarely need copies of sent email, then this may be an ideal solution.

No matter what you decide, you should make a concentrated effort to organize your emails into folders and subfolders and keep the number of emails in your "Inbox" to a minimum.

Spam/Junk Mail Filtering

The campus uses spam filters for all incoming mail. More information on spam filtering and managing the spam filtering for your account can be found here.
Mozilla includes its own, built-in email filtering functionality. Although Mozilla's junk mail filtering should be enabled by default, emails marked as junk/spam are not moved or deleted automatically. In order to adjust these settings, you should follow these steps:
  1. Select "Junk Mail Controls..." from the "Tools" menu.
  2. You can set a special folder for junk/spam, similarly to other special folders. If you decide to use a remote/server folder, we recommend that you keep it separate from any Spam-Messages folder used by the campus filters. Manipulating junk/spam emails, beyond simply marking them, can be configured in the "Handling" area:
    • Check the Move incoming messages determined to be junk mail to: box.
    • Select the desired option and use the pop-up menu to the right to select a location (if using Other:, then click the pop-up menu to the right to select a folder by sliding to the right until the correct folder is found).
    • Check the When I manually mark messages as Junk: box.
    • Select the Move them to the "Junk" folder option.
Here is a sample screenshot:

Junk Mail Controls can be turned on/off by going to the above screen and checking/unchecking the Enable junk mail controls box.

No matter how you configure Mozilla's Junk Mail Controls (unless you turn them off completely), Mozilla should learn to better handle junk/spam emails as you tell it what is and isn't junk/spam. To do this, select any message(s) to be marked or unmarked as junk/spam and select "As Junk" or "As Not Junk" from the "Mark" submenu under the "Message" menu.

Questions/Comments/Concerns

Additional information on configuring and using Mozilla beyond the above can be found by going to the "Help" menu in Mozilla.
