Existing Users and Secure Services
If you have already setup Mail for use with Rutgers-Camden email servers, then you should simply confirm your settings for incoming and outgoing email. This can be accomplished as follows (whether you use POP or IMAP):
- Launch Mail.
- Go to the "Mail" menu and select "Preferences..."
- In the left column, click the appropriate account.
- On the right side, click the "Advanced" tab.
- Check the Use SSL box (to the right of the "Port:" field).
- Click the "Account Information" tab.
- Click the "Server Settings..." button.
- Check the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) box.
- NOTE: If you are using email.clam.rutgers.edu or email.crab.rutgers.edu for your "Outgoing Mail Server:" entry, then make sure to do all of the following as well:
- Select Password from the "Authentication:" pop-up menu.
- Enter your personal NetID (all lowercase, i.e., netid) in the "User Name" field.
- Entering your password is optional.
- Click the "OK" button to close this small window.
NOTE: Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) insist that you use their own SMTP servers for sending mail. If, after using the settings above, you find that you can not send email (especially if you can receive/read emails), please contact your ISP for the required SMTP settings.
- Close the "Accounts" window by clicking the little red circle at the very top, left corner.
If you are moving from the use of POP to IMAP, you should check with your departmental UCS/IT support staff before doing so!
New users, or users setting up Mail for use with Rutgers-Camden email servers for the very first time, should follow the instructions below.
Faculty/staff should use email.crab.rutgers.edu for their email server. Screenshots (below) are of student settings.
General Information
This web page contains instructions for configuring the Apple Mail email program for use with Rutgers-Camden mail servers. The instructions below will setup an IMAP account using secure connections for sending and receiving email. The instructions also include the use of SMTP Authentication, so that Rutgers-Camden mail servers can be used to both send and receive email. For general information on email at Rutgers, please visit the main email web page found here.
Please note that the information in this document is for Apple Mail for Tiger (Mac OS X v10.4.x) ONLY. If you are using a different version of Mac OS X, please go to the appropriate page for your system and version of Apple Mail:
Follow the below instructions after downloading and installing the latest Software Updates for your system (open System Preferences, then click the Software Update icon and then click the "Check Now" button and follow the prompts to install any available updates).
Getting Started
If you are converting from a different email program, you may have the option of importing your existing email. Further information is provided near the end of this document.
If you are moving from the use of POP to IMAP, you should check with your departmental UCS/IT support staff before using these instructions.
In any case, make sure that any other email programs are closed/quit before proceeding.
Configure Mail
- Launch Mail.
- If you have never opened or configured Mail before, a "Welcome to Mail" screen appears.
NOTE: If you have already opened and configured Mail, you can go directly to the "Mail" menu and select "Preferences..." and click the "Accounts" icon. You can then click the "+" button to add a new account, or select and edit an existing account. If you are updating an existing Rutgers-Camden IMAP connection, we recommend that you create a new account, rather than editing an existing account, if possible. Once the new Rutgers account is created and is working properly, then you can arrange any email as needed and delete the old account.
- Click the Continue button.
- The "General Information" screen should be edited as follows:
- Account Type = IMAP
- Account Description = Rutgers-Camden
- Full Name = your full name as it should appear on outgoing emails
- Email Address = netid@camden.rutgers.edu, where netid is your personal NetID
Here's a sample screenshot:
- Click the Continue button.
- The "Incoming Mail Server" screen should be edited as follows:
- Incoming Mail Server = email.clam.rutgers.edu (students), or email.crab.rutgers.edu (faculty/staff)
- User Name = your personal NetID (all lowercase, i.e., netid)
- Password = MUST be left blank! An explanation is available further below...
Here's a sample screenshot:
- Click the Continue button.
NOTE: You will see a login error. Simply click the Continue button once more, and ignore this error.
- The "Incoming Mail Security" screen should be edited as follows:
- Check the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) box
- Authentication = Password
Here's a sample screenshot:
- Click the Continue button.
- The "Outgoing Mail Server" screen should be edited as follows:
- Outgoing Mail Server = email.clam.rutgers.edu (students), or email.crab.rutgers.edu (faculty/staff)
- Check the Use Authentication box
- User Name = your personal NetID (all lowercase, i.e., netid)
- Password = MUST be left blank! An explanation is available further below...
NOTE: Norton/Symantec products may interfere with your ability to send email. If you have trouble sending email, and are using Norton Internet Security, Anti-Virus or SystemWorks (or similar), you may need to update your software, as discussed here.
NOTE: Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) insist that you use their own SMTP servers for sending mail. If, after using the settings above, you find that you cannot send email (especially if you can receive/read emails), please contact your ISP for the required SMTP settings.
Here's a sample screenshot:
- Click the Continue button.
NOTE: You will see a login error. Simply click the Continue button once more, and ignore this error.
- The "Outgoing Mail Security" screen should be edited as follows:
- Check the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) box
- Authentication = Password
Here's a sample screenshot:
- Click the Continue button.
- Confirm the information in the "Account Summary" screen and click the Continue button (or "Go Back" to make any corrections).
Here's a sample screenshot:
- At the "Conclusion" screen, click the Done button.
NOTE: Importing from another email program, if applicable, is up to you, keeping in mind that not all programs or file types are supported for importation.
Here's a sample screenshot:
- The main account window will open and Mail may prompt you for a password.
You MUST click the Cancel button at this time. An explanation is available further below...
Here is a sample screenshot:
- Go to the Mail menu and select Preferences...
- Click the Accounts icon at the top, and select the "Rutgers-Camden" account (or similar) in the left column.
- The "Account Information" tab should be setup as follows:
- Account Type = IMAP
- Description = Rutgers-Camden
- Email Address = netid@camden.rutgers.edu, where netid is your personal NetID
- Full Name = your full name as it should appear on outgoing emails
- Incoming Mail Server = email.clam.rutgers.edu (students), or email.crab.rutgers.edu (faculty/staff)
- User Name = your personal NetID (all lowercase, i.e., netid)
- Password = should be left blank; otherwise, your personal password associated with your NetID
- Outgoing Mail Server = email.clam.rutgers.edu (students), or email.crab.rutgers.edu (faculty/staff)
Here's a sample screenshot:
- NOTE: If your ISP requires use of its own SMTP servers, you can find and change the information by clicking the "Server Settings..." button.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- The "Advanced" tab should already be partially completed. You can add/edit other information optionally, but make sure that the following is configured:
- In the "IMAP Path Prefix:" field, enter INBOX (no spaces, other characters or punctuation, and all UPPERCASE).
NOTE: This important step is the reason for not entering a password up to this point. If you had entered a password and Mail had connected to the server without this field completed, then you may have encountered errors using your IMAP folders and/or Mail may have eventually refused to stay online and check for mail. If you ever encounter such behavior in Mail, please contact help@camden.rutgers.edu for assistance.
- Check the Use SSL box.
Here's a sample screenshot:
- Close this window by clicking the OK button.
- Close the "Accounts" window by clicking the little red circle at the very top, left corner.
- Click the OK button. If prompted, click the Save button.
- The main account window will open and Mail may prompt you for a password. Now you may enter the password for your personal NetID. Checking the box to remember your password is optional, but not recommended. If Mail does not prompt you for a password, go to the "Mailbox" menu and select "Go Online" or quit and relaunch Mail.
- Mail will now connect to the server and display your folders. The "In" icon represents your Inbox, and you may not see a "Trash" (or Drafts or other) icon until you actually delete a message (or change Mail's default handling of deleted messages). Your "Spam-Messages" and any other folders should show as generic blue folders at the end of the list.
Here's a sample screenshot:
Using Mail
Deleted Messages
By default, Mail will delete a message by moving it to your "Trash" folder (similar icon to the Mac OS X Trash icon in the Dock).
WARNING: The default settings in Mail claim to store deleted messages on the server, and to move deleted messages to a "Trash" folder on the server. Deleted messages are also slated to be purged after they are one week old or older.
However, Mail will automatically purge deleted messages at regular intervals and also when quitting Mail. For more information on how to adjust these defaults, please see the Advanced Tiger Mail Settings page.
Sent Mail and Drafts
By default, Mail saves a copy of any message that you send into a "Sent" folder on the server. It also saves any messages that you save into a "Drafts" folder on the server. You have the option of using any folder(s) under the "Rutgers-Camden" folder list, or those "On [Your] Mac" (the latter being stored and only available on your local computer system, rather than on the server). You should note that additional mail stored on the server will count towards your account quota limit. For more information on managing your quota, please see the Managing Your Disk Quota document. For information on how to adjust these settings and the ramifications of same, please see the Advanced Tiger Mail Settings page.
Spam/Junk Mail Filtering
By default, Mail's built-in "Junk Mail Controls" are enabled, but they are not set to move or delete junk/spam messages. Although Rutgers email servers already utilize spam filtering, you may find the additional use of Mail's filtering useful. For more information on university-based spam filtering, and your individual use of same, please see the Spam Filtering page. For information on how to adjust Mail's Junk Mail settings and the ramifications of same, please see the Advanced Tiger Mail Settings page.
Activity Viewer
You may find it useful to open the "Show Activity Viewer" from the "Window" menu to see what Mail is doing and its progress with same. You can drag this window off to the side of your screen and keep it open. If you leave it open when quitting Mail, it should reappear when you next open Mail.
Mailbox List
When Mail first opens, a mailbox list will appear to the (left) side of the main mail window. If you do not see this list, simply go to the "View" menu and choose "Show Mailboxes" to show it. You may also hide it by going to the "View" menu and selecting "Hide Mailboxes."
Importing From Other Programs
If you wish to import existing email or address books go to the "File" menu and choose the "Import Mailboxes..." option. Follow the prompts, keeping in mind that not all programs or file types are supported for importation.
NOTE: If you are importing from an older version of Mail, you should select the folder that contains the account name (or email address) on it, and not necessarily the folder directly above the .mbox file(s) to be imported.
Go Online/Offline
Sometimes (by choice or circumstance), you may find your account "offline." If so, you can use the "Mailbox" menu to select "Go Online" to connect/reconnect to the server.
Questions/Comments/Concerns
Additional information on configuring and using Mail beyond the above can be found by going to the "Help" menu in Mail.
If you have any difficulty with any of the above, please contact help@camden.rutgers.edu for more information.
Questions/comments regarding Camden Computing Services or this web site can be directed to: help@camden.rutgers.edu.
