MindTerm (FTP to SFTP Bridge)

Printer Friendly

Computing Services Information Document UNIX

General Information

This web page contains instructions for configuring MindTerm on any Java-enabled system for use as an FTP to SFTP bridge to connect to Rutgers-Camden servers. An FTP to SFTP bridge allows (usually older) FTP software to connect to an SFTP host. This works for most FTP clients, such as WebDrive, Fetch or WS_FTP, as well as software that includes its own FTP client, such as Dreamweaver, Nvu or Mozilla Suite. New versions of most software now support SFTP. If a newer version supports SFTP, we highly recommend upgrading instead. If not, migrating to software that does support SFTP is also recommended. Otherwise, an FTP to SFTP bridge may be the only reasonable solution.

Java Required

MindTerm relies upon Java being installed, so the first step is to make sure that the latest Java software is available and installed:

Download MindTerm

  1. Download MindTerm directly from AppGate's website.
  2. Unzip (extract) the file by double-clicking it or using other software/commands for extraction. Windows users may be prompted for more input to extract the file. If so, simply read and click-through the additional screens to complete the extraction.

Connect MindTerm (1st Time)

  1. Start MindTerm by double-clicking the mindterm.jar file, or using other commands to launch the file using java.
    • NOTE: If the application fails to start, make sure you have Java installed.
  2. Click the Accept button to agree to the terms.
  3. Click the Yes button to create a MindTerm directory.
  4. A MindTerm window opens:
    1. Students - type clam.rutgers.edu as the host and save clam as an alias.
    2. Faculty/Staff - type crab.rutgers.edu as the host and save crab as an alias.
    SSH Server/Alias: clam.rutgers.edu
No settings file for clam.rutgers.edu found.
    (^C = cancel, ^D or empty = don't save)
    Save as alias : clam
  5. Click the Yes button to create a known hosts (hostkeys) directory.
  6. Click the Yes button to add the host (clam or crab) to your known hosts (hostkeys) directory.
  7. Enter your NetID.
  8. Click the OK button after reading the Alert prompt.
  9. Enter your password.

Software Configuration Tips

Your FTP client or publishing software (Dreamweaver, Fetch, WebDrive, etc.) needs to connect to server (or host) 127.0.0.1 and port 2121, which is a regular FTP server. When the connection is made, MindTerm receives this and then bridges it through its own SFTP connection to Rutgers-Camden servers.
NOTE: If there is no available field for entering the port number, try specifying the hostname as 127.0.0.1:2121, or as 127.0.0.1 2121.
Remember, do NOT close MindTerm until after your FTP session is no longer needed.

Disconnect MindTerm

Once the FTP connection is no longer needed, quit the software that required FTP (Dreamweaver, Fetch, WebDrive, etc.), then switch to the MindTerm window.
If MindTerm shows the Main Menu> prompt, type quit and press the enter/return key.
If the clam% (or crab%) prompt appears (either after the menu, above, or on its own), type exit and press the enter/return key.
At MindTerm's SSH Server/Alias prompt, go to the File menu and select Exit to quit MindTerm.
