Disabling Norton/Symantec
Email Scanning |

General Information
This web page contains instructions for disabling Norton/Symantec (Anti-Virus) products from scanning outgoing or incoming emails via a secured server connection. The instructions below are based on Norton's/Symantec's own "Knowledge Base" article on the topic. Other possible causes/solutions are offered by an additional Knowledge Base article. For general information on email at Rutgers, please visit the main email web page found here.
Please note that the information in this document covers Norton/Symantec products through v2006; however, the settings described below may apply equally to other/newer products. We highly recommend the use of "RADS", available free to the Rutgers community. If switching, you may wish to uninstall Norton/Symantec products before installing any replacements.
About This Issue
When sending or receiving email under Windows, you may encounter the message, "an encrypted e-mail has been detected." After confirming this message, you may encounter one or more of the following error messages:
- "encryption too weak"
- "Server does not support SSL"
- "TLS not available due to temporary reason"
- "Unable to establish a SSL connection with the server"
This typically indicates that your Norton/Symantec anti-virus program is scanning outgoing or incoming email messages and is blocking you from sending or receiving email over a secure (encrypted) connection.
If you are encountering this issue, you may need to turn off this scanning in order to successfully send and receive email.
Disabling email scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton/Symantec's Auto-Protect (aka, "File System Auto-Protect") feature will scan any incoming files, including email, as they are saved to your hard drive. Email scanning is just an additional layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions.
