Printer Friendly

Computing Services Information Document PC/Windows

Existing Users and Secure Services

If you have already setup Eudora for use with Rutgers-Camden email servers, then you should simply confirm your settings for incoming and outgoing email. This can be accomplished as follows (whether you use POP or IMAP):
  1. Launch Eudora.
  2. Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Options..."
  3. In the left column, click the "Checking Mail" icon.
  4. Set the "Secure Sockets when Receiving" pop-up menu to Required, Alternate Port.
  5. In the left column, click the "Sending Mail" icon.
  6. Make sure that the Allow authentication box is checked.
  7. Set the "Secure Sockets when Sending" pop-up menu to Required, STARTTLS.
NOTE: Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) insist that you use their own SMTP servers for sending mail. If, after using the settings above, you find that you can not send email (especially if you can receive/read emails), please contact your ISP for the required SMTP settings.
  8. Click the "OK" button to save your settings and close the settings window.

If you are moving from the use of POP to IMAP, you should check with your departmental UCS/IT support staff before doing so!

New users, or users setting up Eudora for use with Rutgers-Camden email servers for the very first time, should follow the instructions below.
Faculty/staff should use email.crab.rutgers.edu for their email server. Screenshots (below) are of student settings.

General Information

This web page contains instructions for configuring the Windows version of the Eudora email program for use with Rutgers-Camden mail servers. The instructions below will setup an IMAP account using secure connections for sending and receiving email. The instructions also include the use of SMTP Authentication, so that Rutgers-Camden mail servers can be used to both send and receive email. Although POP connections are not recommended, this document provides instructions for securing a POP connection, along with other notes. For general information on email at Rutgers, please visit the main email web page found here.

Camden Computing Services does not officially support Eudora; however this document is provided as a courtesy to those who choose Eudora over other email programs. The information and screenshots in this document are based upon Eudora v7.x for Windows; however, older versions should function similarly. Users of Windows 95 are limited to v5.2.1. Using the latest available version of Eudora is highly recommended, and can be found here.

Follow the below instructions after downloading and installing Eudora.

Getting Started

If you are converting from a different email program, you may have the option of importing your existing email. Further information is provided near the end of this document.

If you are upgrading an existing version, the newer version should automatically use your old settings.

If you are moving from the use of POP to IMAP, you should check with your departmental UCS/IT support staff before using these instructions.

In any case, make sure that any other email programs are closed/quit before proceeding.

Configure Eudora

"Getting Started" again...

  1. Launch Eudora.
  2. If a "Welcome to Eudora!" screen appears, click the "Cancel" button.
  3. If the "Options" window does not appear, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Options..."
  4. Make sure that the first icon in the left column is Getting Started (you may need to scroll up the list to find it) and select this icon.
  5. The settings on the right should be edited as follows:
    • Real name: your full name as it should appear on outgoing emails
    • Email address: netid@camden.rutgers.edu, where netid is your personal NetID
    • Mail Server (Incoming): email.clam.rutgers.edu (students), or email.crab.rutgers.edu (faculty/staff)
    • User Name: your personal NetID (all lowercase)
    • SMTP Server (Outgoing): email.clam.rutgers.edu (students), or email.crab.rutgers.edu (faculty/staff)
    • Make sure that the Allow authentication box is checked.
Here's a sample screenshot:

Checking Mail

  1. Click the Checking Mail icon in the left column.
Note that some items are already configured with the information entered previously (see "'Getting Started' again..." above).
  2. Make sure that the screen is set as follows:
    • Mail Server: email.clam.rutgers.edu (students), or email.crab.rutgers.edu (faculty/staff)
    • User Name: your personal NetID (all lowercase)
    • Secure Sockets when Receiving: Required, Alternate Port.
    • NOTE: POP users should also use Required, Alternate Port to secure their connections.
    • Checking the "Save password" box is optional, but not recommended.
Here's a sample screenshot:

Incoming Mail

  1. Click the Incoming Mail icon in the left column.
  2. Make sure that Server configuration is set to IMAP.
  3. NOTE: POP users should check with their departmental UCS/IT support staff before switching to IMAP. IMAP is recommended, particularly for new users.
  4. The rest of the settings may be left alone.
Here's a sample screenshot:

Sending Mail

  1. Click the Sending Mail icon in the left column.
Note that some items are already configured with the information entered previously (see "'Getting Started' again..." above).
  2. Make sure that the screen is set as follows:
    • Email address: netid@camden.rutgers.edu, where netid is your personal NetID
    • SMTP server: email.clam.rutgers.edu (students), or email.crab.rutgers.edu (faculty/staff)
    • SMTP Relay Personality: <Dominant> (or another appropriate Eudora "personality," if you use more than one)
    • Make sure that the Allow authentication box is checked.
    • Secure Sockets when Sending: Required, STARTTLS.
NOTE: Norton/Symantec products may interfere with your ability to send email. If you have trouble sending email, and are using Norton Anti-Virus or SystemWorks (or similar), you will need to disable outgoing email scanning. We highly recommend the use of "RADS", available free to the Rutgers community. If switching, you may wish to uninstall Norton/Symantec products before installing any replacements.
    • NOTE: Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) insist that you use their own SMTP servers for sending mail. If, after using the settings above, you find that you can not send email (especially if you can receive/read emails), please contact your ISP for the required SMTP settings.
Here's a sample screenshot:

Viewing Mail

  1. Scroll down to click the Viewing Mail icon in the left column.
  2. UNCHECK the Use Microsoft's viewer box.
WARNING: Although checking this box may help to better view certain attachments, it also opens the door to some Windows/Internet Explorer security vulnerabilities and exploits, and is NOT recommended.
  3. The rest of the settings may be left alone.
Here's a sample screenshot:

Confirm Settings

  1. Click the OK button to close the "Settings" window.
  2. If you are prompted to update "filters," then make sure to click the "Ignore Filter(s)" button for each prompt.
  3. You may need to Quit Eudora and then relaunch Eudora to have the above settings take full effect.

Using Eudora

(Re)Launching Eudora

  1. Eudora will open with only the toolbar and ad window (if you have not paid for the full version and are using the default "Sponsored Mode").
  2. Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Task Status" to allow you to see more information on your server connection at the bottom of your Eudora screen.
  3. Click the fourth button in from the left side of the toolbar (Check Mail).
  4. When prompted, enter the password associated with your NetID (if you checked the "Save Password" box earlier, you should only have to do this once) and click the OK button.
Here's a sample screenshot:

Opening Mailboxes (aka, Folders)

  1. Go to the "Mailbox" menu and select a mailbox to open.
  2. The list can also be found if you click the "Mailboxes" tab at the bottom of the middle-left area as seen below:
  3. Click the plus sign to the left of a folder to expand the list, if applicable.
  4. Double-click on any folder to open a window listing all of the emails within that folder.

Deleted Messages

  1. By default, Eudora will delete a message by making it invisible and marking it as deleted in the background.
NOTE: POP users will have deleted mail moved to the "Trash" folder in the "Eudora" folder list.
  2. To show deleted messages, right-click on the folder (i.e., "Inbox") and select "Show Deleted Messages."
  3. You can then right-click on any deleted message to choose "Undelete Message" as desired.
  4. If you do not show deleted messages, then they may quickly begin to accumulate. It is imperative that you regularly use the "Message" menu to "Purge Messages" for each IMAP folder.
NOTE: One alternative is to set deleted messages to be purged automatically, and which can be set as follows:
    1. Go to the "Tools" menu and choose the "Personalities" options.
    2. In the area that appears, right-click on "<Dominant>" (or another appropriate Eudora "personality," if you use more than one) and select "Properties" from the menu that appears.
    3. Click the "Incoming Mail" tab and select the Always option.
    4. Click the OK button to return to Eudora's main window.
NOTE: POP users empty Trash via the "Empty Trash" option in the "Special" menu.

Sent Mail and Drafts

By default, Eudora saves any messages that you send, or save to send later, into your "Out" folder under the "Eudora" (local) folder list. IMAP users have the option of using a folder under your "Rutgers-Camden" folder list, instead of those in the "Eudora" folder list (the latter being stored and only available on your local computer system, rather than on the server). Before choosing to do this, you should note that additional mail stored on the server will count towards your account quota limit. For more information on managing your quota, please see the Managing Your NetID (account) Quota document. For information on how to adjust these settings and the ramifications of same, please see the Advanced Eudora Settings page.

Configuring Your Eudora Toolbar

The default toolbar has a shortcut to the local "In" and local "Out" mailboxes/folders that are only stored on your local system (which is fine for POP users). The Eudora toolbar should be reconfigured so that the shortcut button points to the correct folders on the Rutgers mail server. For more information on how to do this, please see the Advanced Eudora Settings page.

Importing From Other Programs

If you wish to import existing email or address books go to the "File" menu and choose the "Import..." option. Follow the prompts, keeping in mind that not all programs or file types are supported for importation.

Questions/Comments/Concerns

Additional information on configuring and using Eudora beyond the above can be found by going to the "Help" menu in Eudora.
The Eudora manual (PDF) may also be helpful.
