General Information
This web page contains information on configuring some of the advanced features of the Eudora email program.
The primary instructions for configuring Eudora are available here.
For general information on email at Rutgers, please visit the main email web page found here.
Sent Mail and Drafts
The main Eudora instructions discuss using Eudora's defaults for copies of sent or draft/saved mail. The "Out" folder, along with "Trash" and "Junk E-mail" (see below), are called special folders. Although it is not possible to change the default location of these special folders, it is possible to store sent and draft/saved emails on the server.
One benefit of using remote/server folders is the ability to see and access such folders/emails on other systems, including via Web Mail.
If you decide to use any remote/server folder(s) to store your sent and/or draft/saved mail, you will need to create the folder(s) and "filter(s)" as per the following steps:
- To use a "filter" to transfer sent mail to the server:
- Eudora will not create a remote/server folder automatically. Instead, right-click on an account or folder and choose "New..." from the menu that appears in order to create a "sent-mail" (or "Sent" or similar) mailbox/folder in same.
- Select "Filters" from the "Tools" menu.
- Click the "New" button at the bottom of the filters list (bottom-left).
- On the right hand side, and under the "Match" area, the settings should be edited as follows:
- Check ONLY the Outgoing box.
- In the first "Header:" pop-up menu, select From.
- In the pop-up menu below, select contains.
- In the filed to the right of the "contains" pop-up menu, enter netid@camden.rutgers.edu, where netid is your personal NetID.
- In the pop-up menu below, select ignore.
- Leave the second "Header:" pop-up menu blank.
- In the "Action" area, select Transfer to from the first pop-up menu.
- Click the button to the right, then to "<Dominant>" (or another appropriate Eudora "personality," if you use more than one), then slide right onto "Inbox" and then slide further right to select Sent (or sent-mail or similar as exists, or as you created previously for storing sent mail).
- Leave the rest of the pop-up menus set to None.
- Now, whenever an email goes out from you, it will be moved to your remote/server folder instead of staying in the "Eudora" (local) "Out" folder.
Here's a sample screenshot:
- To use a "filter" to transfer drafts to the server:
- Eudora will not create a remote/server folder automatically. Instead, right-click on an account or folder and choose "New..." from the menu that appears in order to create a "postponed-msgs" (or "Drafts" or similar) mailbox/folder in same.
- Select "Filters" from the "Tools" menu.
- Click the "New" button at the bottom of the filters list (bottom-left).
- On the right hand side, and under the "Match" area, the settings should be edited as follows:
- Check ONLY the Manual box.
- Click the button to the right, then to "<Dominant>" (or another appropriate Eudora "personality," if you use more than one), then slide right onto "Inbox" and then slide further right to select Drafts (or postponed-msgs or similar as exists, or as you created previously for storing sent mail).
- Leave the rest of the pop-up menus set to None.
- Unlike the sent mail filter above, you will need to use the "Special" menu to "Filter Messages" in order to move draft mail to your remote/server folder from the "Eudora" (local) "Out" folder.
Here's a sample screenshot:
While you can prevent the saving of draft mail by never saving one when prompted, you cannot stop Eudora from automatically saving a copy of every email sent (to any folder). If you do not wish to save sent mail, you will need to manually delete it and make sure that the trash is emptied and/or the folder (as per above) is purged regularly.
No matter what you decide, you should make a concentrated effort to organize your emails into folders and subfolders and keep the number of emails in your "Inbox" to a minimum.
Configuring Your Eudora Toolbar
- Locate the "In" mailbox icon on the toolbar (usually the 2nd button from the left).
- Right-click the button.
- Choose Customize... from the menu that appears.
- Click the Mailboxes tab.
- Click on Inbox under <Dominant> (or another appropriate Eudora "personality," if you use more than one).
- Drag the first button (without the arrow) to the toolbar.
- Click and drag the "In" button from the toolbar into the button area.
- If you are using a remote/server folder to store your sent emails, expand Inbox under <Dominant> (or another appropriate Eudora "personality," if you use more than one), to click on sent-mail (or Sent or similar).
- Drag the first button (without the arrow) to the toolbar.
- If you are using a remote/server folder to store your sent emails, also click and drag the "Out" button from the toolbar (usually the 3rd button from the left) into the button area.
- The toolbar buttons have now been re-mapped to the IMAP folders. You can now open your Rutgers "Inbox" and "sent-mail" (or "Sent" or similar) by clicking these toolbar buttons.
- You can add and delete other buttons similarly.
NOTE: One drawback to this is that Eudora only supports generic icons for IMAP folders.

Spam/Junk Mail Filtering
The campus uses spam filters for all incoming mail. More information on spam filtering and managing the spam filtering for your account can be found here.
Eudora includes its own, built-in email filtering functionality, but only in the paid versions. If you choose to upgrade and use this, please see Eudora's "Help" menu for more information.
Questions/Comments/Concerns
