General Information
This web page contains information on configuring some of the advanced features of the Outlook Express email program, as well as certain older versions of Outlook.
The primary instructions for configuring Outlook Express are available here.
For general information on email at Rutgers, please visit the main email web page found here.
Sent Mail and Drafts
The main Outlook Express instructions discuss using Outlook Express' defaults for copies of sent or draft/saved mail. The "Sent Items" "Drafts" and "Outbox" folders, along with "Deleted Items," are called special folders. You have the option of choosing different folders than the defaults for sent and/or drafts/saved emails.
One benefit of storing emails within remote/server folders is the ability to see and access such folders/emails on other systems, including via Web Mail.
If you decide to use remote/server folders to store your special folders, you can use the names already in the fields or give them other names. Outlook Express should automatically create these folders for you, if they do not already exist. If you want to create and/or use existing folders (i.e., "sent-mail" and "postponed-msgs" or similar), simply enter the folder name(s) in the relevant field(s).
NOTE: If the folders selected above do not show properly in the list of folders for your account, simply click on the account name in the left column, then click the "IMAP Folder..." button (next to the "Synchronize Account" button) in the area on the right. In the window that appears, click the "Reset List" button. When it is finished, click the "OK" button to return to the main Outlook Express window. The folders should now appear as expected.
NOTE: Older versions of Outlook have a "Rules Wizard..." in the "Tools" menu. Among other uses, it allows for a rule to copy sent emails to a remote/server folder (in addition to storing them in the default (local) "Sent Items" folder). See the Advanced Outlook Settings page for more information on "Sent Mail and Drafts."
While you do not have the option of turning off the "Drafts" folder completely (except by never saving a draft email), you can stop Outlook Express from automatically saving a copy of every sent email by going to the "Tools" menu and selecting "Options." In the "Options" screen that appears, click the "Send" tab and uncheck the Save copy of sent messages in the 'Sent Items' folder box. One drawback of this setting is the need to manually include your own email address in either the To:, Cc: or similar field(s) for any email for which you do want a copy saved. If you rarely need copies of sent email, then this may be an ideal solution.
No matter what you decide, you should make a concentrated effort to organize your emails into folders and subfolders and keep the number of emails in your "Inbox" to a minimum.
Spam/Junk Mail Filtering
The campus uses spam filters for all incoming mail. More information on spam filtering and managing the spam filtering for your account can be found here.
Outlook Express does not include its own (nor do older versions of Outlook include their own) built-in email filtering functionality, unlike some other email clients.
Questions/Comments/Concerns
Additional information on configuring and using Outlook Express beyond the above can be found by going to the "Help" menu in Outlook Express.
