Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.02x for Windows

This document will explain how to use Microsoft Internet Explorer
on a PC. The information in this document is specific to the setup
in Camden Computing Services labs on the Camden Campus.
Getting Started:
Internet Explorer is located in the Communications folder on the
desktop:
However, if there is not, you can always do the following:
Step 1: Locate the "Start" button, located at the bottom of the
screen.
Step 2: Click on the "Start" button, go up to programs, and choose
"Internet
Explorer."
Navigation:
When you open Internet Explorer, the first page that opens is the
home page. In this case, the home page is the Rutgers
University Computing Services - Camden page. Looking at the
browser, there are several
toolbars and buttons.
Toolbar #1:
The first toolbar includes "File," "Edit," "View," "Favorites,"
"Tools,"
and "Help."
| File |
Allows you to open a new browser window, save a webpage, print a webpage,
send a webpage via email or shortcut, or close the browser. |
| Edit |
Allows you to select, cut, copy, or paste anything from a webpage,
as well as find a particular word on a webpage by searching. |
| View |
Allows you to customize the browser's toolbars, as well as go to
Back, forward, or Home, stop a apge from loading,
or refresh a webpage. You can also view the HTML code of a webpage
using "View." |
| Favorites |
Allows you to add a webpage to your favorites, organize your
favorites,
or view your stored favorites. This is called "Bookmarks" in
Firefox (or mozilla). |
| Tools |
By selecting "Tools," you can access your mail in Mozilla
Thunderbird, which
is the default. You can also access various Internet options, such
as Pop Up blockers, and Internet options. |
Toolbar #2:
The second tool bar consists of several icons: "Back,"
"Forward,"
"Stop," "Refresh," "Home," "Search," "Favorites," "History," "Mail,"
"Print," "Edit, Discuss, Research, and Messenger"
| Back |
By clicking the "Back" button, you can view the last webpage that
you had visited in the browser. |
| Forward |
Similarly, "Forward" allows you to visit the page you had
previously
visited after the page you are currently viewing. By holding
down
either the "Back or "Forward" buttons, a list will pop up, containing
the
most recent pages that you have visited. |
| Stop |
Pushing the "Stop" button stops the current page you are on
from
loading. |
| Refresh |
"Refresh" re-loads the page that you are currently viewing |
| Home |
If you select "Home," the home page of the computer automatically
loads
(the Camden Computing Services website). |
| Search |
If you would like to search for something on the Internet,
through
the Explorer browser, select "Search." A new window pops up on
the
left side of the screen, with several search options. |
| Favorites |
This is the same as the "Favorites" in the first toolbar, but
this
time a window pops up on the left of the screen. |
| History |
"History" list the sites that you have visited. You can
also
search your website history. |
| Mail |
This is the same as the "Mail" in the first toolbar. By default, it
opens Thunderbird (Mozilla) Mail. |
| Print |
Selecting this automatically prints the current page. This
is
different from choosing "Print" from the "File" menu, where you can
set
up the print job. |
| Edit |
Here you can edit the code of the webpage you are currently
viewing using a number of programs. Office FrontPage, Notepad, Open
Office and Word. Knowledge of webpage design is required. |
| Discuss |
"Discuss" If your server supports this, it allows one who publishes
a web page to have comments made through other MicroSoft products. |
| Research |
"Research"lets you search some reference sources such as several
dictionaries, Encarta Encyclopedia, etc.. |
| Messenger |
"Messenger.Accesses your windows Messenger Account if you have
one set up. |
Toolbar #3:
The third toolbar consists of the location bar. Type in the
location
(URL) of the website that you want to view and press enter (or select
"Go"
which is to the right of the location bar). If it is a page
that you have previously visited, the program may provide a list of
websites with similar beginning addresses that you can choose from in
drop down box format.
Importing Your Bookmarks From Firefox (Mozilla) to Internet Explorer
Favorites:
If you would like to import your list of bookmarks from Firefox to the
Internet Explorer Browser, follow these steps:

From the top toolbar, select "File."

Choose "Import and Export."

The "Import/Export Wizard" appears. Press "Next."

Select "Import Favorites" and press "Next."

Choose "Import Favorites" (Import Favorites from another browser
or file).
NOTE:To get your bookmarks that you've set in the labs,
Select "Browse"
and then choose your H: (home directory)from the dropdown box
and then select the folder .pcnetscape and finally select
"bookmark.html."

Press "Next."

Select the folder where you would like the favorites to be placed
(Usually the folder "Personal Bookmarks"). Press "Next."

Press "Finish"
Now your Netscape bookmarks have sucessfully been placed into your Internet
Explorer favorites.
To Exit Internet Explorer:
To exit Internet Explorer, just click on "File" from the top toolbar and
select "Close." You can also click the "x" at the top right of the
screen. Remember to log off of the computer.
