Introduction

These instructions are the basics for creating and posting a web page on your Rutgers student account.
All students are allocated 300MB of  disk space on their clam account.

Some general information that you need to know about the Rutgers Camden web server is that it is a system that runs a unix based operating system, Solaris. That means that when you save files, they are CASE SENSITIVE. You are Strongly encouraged not to use spaces in your file names. If you use UPPER CASE, it must be entered into the web address that way.

Two tools are needed in order to create and make changes to a student web page: nvu and WebDrive, both of which are available on the Windows PCs in the public computing labs.
If you are creating or editing a web page from home, both programs can be downloaded for free.  Click here to go to the nvu homepage and download the latest version for the PC.

Rutgers students can download WebDrive for their own use. More information is available here.
This document was created for the nvu version on the PCs. For publishing purposes, you will need to know in which folder (directory) on your clam account to store the web page files. For most accounts, the folder(directory) that stores personal web pages is public_html.

There are two main steps involved in creating a page:

  1. Creating or Editing your web page.
  2. Saving your web page. (Publishing is not available at this time)

Creating and Editing  A Web Page Using nvu

Starting nvu
First you have to start up the nvu program. In the public labs on campus, nvu is located in the New Stuff folder on the desktop.
When the nvu window opens, you will automatically be placed in a new, blank webpage. You may toggle off the Site Management by pressing the F9 function key.

The first task that you will want to do is set up some basic information about your web page, by editing the page properties.
To do this you want to go to Format > Page and Title Properties option which will bring up a window where you can enter the pertinent information:

Page & title properties submenu

You may also want to set your page colors and background when you begin.  You can always change the colors later.  It is good web page writing practice to keep links and visited links the default colors, since that is what people are accustomed to.
Below is a screen shot of the Page Colors and Background options:

Saving your Web Page

It is not a straightforward process to save your web page files as with some commercial web page programs such as Dreamweaver, due to security measures.  In order to save your file(s), you will need to use Webdrive and sign onto your clam or crab account and save into the web folder (directory) public_html. Start the Webdrive program.

Next check the Advanced tab to see that the File Attributes for group and other are set to Read and Execute before signing on.

You will choose Save As from the File menu and change the directory from the My Documents directory (See below image) to the W: drive (which is your home directory for your account that you just signed onto) and the folder public_html which contains web files for the account.

Save As option on File menu

Web files should end in .html or .htm The name should not include any spaces or special characters other than - (dash), _ (underscore) or . for clarity's sake.

Remember to save any associated picture or image files in the public_folder too.

Save w: drive - public_html folder

Viewing your Page on the web

In order to check your page on the web, you will need to know its address. Webpages are Rutgers Camden have the following naming conventions.

Webpages for students would be viewed by entering http://clam.rutgers.edu/~netid/webfile.html where you would replace netid with your clam account name and webfile.html would be replaced with the name of your webfile.

For example, http://clam.rutgers.edu/~johndoe/classproject.html would be the web address for a student with the netid johndoe who has saved his webpage in the file name classproject.html

There is a special name you can call your file, index.html or index.htm that will allow you to view your webpage at the following address:
http://clam.rutgers.edu/~netid

For example, if your netid is johndoe then you could view your webpage at:
http://clam.rutgers.edu/~johndoe

Viewing Webpages that have been Updated

If you update a webpage and republish (resave) it using WebDrive, you must click on Reload in your browser in order to clear the old copy of the web page out of the computer's browser cache.

Permissions Problems

If you receive an error message like the one below when trying to view your page, you could have a permission problem with a file.

webpage permission error

In order to make your webpage visible to your fellow students and instructor(s), you will need to access an Account tool at: http://clam.rutgers.edu/account_tools.html
Then you will scroll down on that web page until you see Web Directory Permissions

Editing an Existing Web Page

To edit a web page which was previously begun and saved, start nvu and click on the File menu and choose Open Web Location from the drop down menu:

From the Open Web Location you will enter the web location of your web file that you have been working on.

NVU operates in a manner similar to wordprocessing software such as  Microsoft Word. It allows you to do basic text editing without learning hypertext markup language (HTML).  If you look at the bottom, left hand side of the program window, you will see choices for the modes in which you can view your web page. Typically you will work in Normal mode as shown below.

editing modes

The basic functions that can be performed with nvu include text entry and formatting,  linking to other websites, inserting graphics, and spell checking.

Text Entry

There are various formats available for your webpage text. Headings are available in 6 different sizes, with Heading 1 being the largest size available. Typically you would set the heading of your main page in Heading 1. Subheadings would be progressively smaller in type. Most of your sentences will be in Body Text.

The paragraph option sets a group of sentences apart with a blank line after the paragraph. Paragraph will not indent for you on a webpage.

text formats

You can also make text BOLD, italicized, and underlined, or set up lists such as ordered and unordered using the formatting toolbar.

To change a font, click on the Variable Width drop down box, to see your options.  Keep in mind that readability is important in good web site design.

Adding Images or Graphics Files

You may want to add an image file of your own or one that is in the public domain to your webpage. The first step is to copy them into the public_html directory of your account via webdrive. The next step is to get the image(s)linked to your web page. nvu provides the means to link the image or picture to your web page.

  1. First locate your image file in your webdrive public_html folder.
  2. It is good practice to place a short, verbal description of your image in the alternate text area.
  3. Make sure that URL is relative to page location is checked.

Linking to Other WebPages

You can link to other webpages within your webpage, by clicking on the Link icon in nvu. The basic dialog box that pops up is shown below: you enter in the text you want displayed for the link and the actuall link. You must type in the full link name.
