General Information
This web page contains instructions for configuring WebDrive v5.2 for use with
Rutgers-Camden servers. Camden Computing Services is continuing to offer and support
WebDrive v5.2 for those using Windows 9x/ME. Some notes and settings below may have
changed for newer versions of WebDrive, and Windows 2000/XP/Vista users should instead use WebDrive v8.x.
WebDrive v5.2 DOES NOT support secure (SFTP) connections to Rutgers-Camden servers. Therefore, it can ONLY be used in conjunction with MindTerm's FTP to SFTP bridge functionality.
WebDrive is a program that serves as a means to transfer files to and from a remote location, such as a clam or crab account area. WebDrive v7.3x and above can be configured as a secure replacement for programs that use only the insecure File Transfer Protocol (FTP), which has been decommissioned. WebDrive allows faculty, staff and students to manage their home directory on clam or crab, or to publish web pages to clam, crab (or shad) from their home or office computer. By installing and configuring WebDrive, your home directory on clam or crab (and/or a web directory on shad) can be accessed just like any other drive on your PC, such as the C:\ drive, D:\ drive or others. It can also replicate the H:\ drive that is available when you login to a public lab computer. Rutgers has a site license for WebDrive, so all that you need to do is download the software. This requires a valid NetID (andromeda, clam, crab, eden, pegasus, rci username and password).
Installing WebDrive
- First, be sure to uninstall any other install(s)/version(s) of WebDrive. This can be accomplished by going to the "Start" menu, then to "Settings," and opening the "Control Panel" to select/double-click "Add/Remove Programs."
- Download the software (you will need to login).
- Once the file transfer is complete, make sure all other programs are closed and run the file by double-clicking on it (wd52.exe).
- After loading, the "Welcome" screen will appear. Read the information and then click the Next button.
- The "License Agreement" window should appear next. Read the license and click on the Yes button in order to continue the installation.
- The "Destination Folder" window will appear next. Simply accept the default path by clicking on the Next button.
- The WebDrive program will now install, and you may be prompted to reboot your computer once it completes. If so, go ahead and reboot by selecting the Yes... (restart) option and clicking the Finish button.
Setup
- If you are using Zone Alarm, make sure to have the Internet security level set to medium. You might also need to disable the "block local servers" option in the security section.
- If you are using any other firewall software, be sure to configure it to allow WebDrive to run (if you have any difficulties using WebDrive, please contact help@camden.rutgers.edu for additional support).
- After installing (and possibly rebooting), make sure to open WebDrive in order to continue.
Open WebDrive by right-clicking on its icon in the lower right corner of your screen (near your system clock).
Here's a sample screenshot:

- A window should appear with shortcuts to WebDrive. If no window appears, the installation can be verified by going to the "Start" menu, to "Programs" (or, "All Programs"), and then to "WebDrive."
- When WebDrive launches, it will present a screen with different sites listed, such as Intel, Microsoft and Netscape on the left and some miscellaneous information to the right.
- Click the New Site button in the bottom-left corner. Enter any name for this new connection, such as "Rutgers-Camden" (students may wish to use "Rutgers-Clam" and faculty/staff may wish to use "Rutgers-Crab").
- Enter the appropriate server name in the second field:
- Students = clam.rutgers.edu
- Faculty/Staff = crab.rutgers.edu
- NOTE: If usign WebDrive to publish web pages on shad, then enter shad.rutgers.edu in this second field instead.
Here's a sample screenshot:

- Click the Finish button to create this new site and return to the main screen.
- Some new information should now be showing. Make sure to use the following settings:
- Server Type = FTP
- Drive = any letter not already (or regularly) in use (W: is fine as the default, although using H: to match the campus computing labs may also be desired). To check which letters are in use, open "My Computer" on the desktop or via the "Start" menu.
- The next two checkboxes are optional.
- Uncheck the Anonymous/Public Logon box
- Username = your personal NetID or web account name (all lowercase)
NOTE: Use the NetID for the system name entered previously (if you have more than one account).
- Entering your password now is optional, as is using the Save Password checkbox; however, it is a good idea to not use this, in order to keep your account files protected from others who may use your system, and also to help you remember your password by using it more often.
- Now is also a good time to go ahead and select the other three sites (Intel, Microsoft and Netscape) and click the Delete button to remove them.
Here's a sample screenshot:

- Click the Advanced button.
- Click the Encryption tab.
- In the "FTP" section, change the pop-up menu to be SSH and check the Secure data channel box.
Here is a sample screenshot:

- Click the OK button to return to the account settings screen again.
- Click on the Connect button in the upper-right corner.
- Enter your password if/when prompted.
- Click the OK button and then a window will appear with your home directory open and your account files inside.
- To disconnect a WebDrive drive, you should be able to open WebDrive by right-clicking on its icon in the lower right corner of your screen (near your system clock).
Here's a sample screenshot:

Home Directory
When connecting with WebDrive, you will be placed in your home directory by default. For personal accounts, you will recognize this as your public lab H:\ drive. However, this may not be desirable for departmental or other non-personal web accounts.
WebDrive also allows for setting the starting directory, which may be useful for web publishing. For example, departmental accounts are found in (under) "/services/WWW" on shad. Use the following steps to adjust the starting directory:
- Open WebDrive, and in the main window, click the Advanced button.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- In the "Root Directory" field, enter the desired starting location, i.e., /services/WWW (or "deeper," into a more specific location).
- Click the OK button. Now when you connect, you should be able to connect to shad.rutgers.edu and navigate to the directory which contains your web site, and be able to save or copy your web files to the proper place on shad.rutgers.edu via WebDrive.
Here's a sample screenshot:
In addition, you can have more than one "site" in WebDrive set to the same server and/or to the same drive letter, if you find it helpful for keeping different sites/accounts/locations organized. However, keep in mind that there are limitations:
- If making more than one connection at a given time, each connection must be set to different drive letters (and there is a limit on the drive letters available).
-OR-
- The same drive letter can be used if you make sure to uncheck the Connect at login/startup box for all (or all but one) of the connections using the same drive letter. You will also have to disconnect any connection using a drive letter before connecting with one using that same drive letter.
File Management
After connecting, files can be managed just like any other drive, such as A:\, C:\, D:\ or others. To copy a file from your home directory to your local system, simply drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste (or cut-and-paste) files normally. Files can also be copied from your local system to your remote account the same ways. This new, remote drive letter is also available to other programs when using Open or Save commands in File menus and similar operations.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
There may be a lot of directories and files that start with a period (aka, "dot files"), such as .dt or .xresources and others. These are usually hidden and are required by Rutgers systems. PLEASE DO NOT edit, move, rename or delete them, as such changes could damage your account or make it otherwise unusable! If you have any questions about this, please contact HELP via help@camden.rutgers.edu.
File Permissions
Although only an issue when dealing with web publishing, WebDrive also supports the adjustment of file permissions.
For personal web sites (i.e., using personal clam or crab accounts), Camden Computing Services provides a tool to correctly set web directory permissions:
However, for departmental or other non-personal web publishing, permissions can be adjusted using WebDrive (and/or the web publishing program of choice) as follows:
- Open WebDrive and connect to a site, or open the WebDrive drive letter in "My Computer."
- Navigate to, and right-click on the desired file or folder.
- In the (contextual) menu that appears, select Properties.
- In the window that appears, click the WebDrive tab.
- Select the permissions as desired. For web files, you should check the boxes as follows (to result in a "CHMOD" setting of 755).
Here's a sample screenshot:

- Click the OK button.
NOTE: Although WebDrive v5.2 will always show the permissions of the folder/file as being "CHMOD: 644" (with the relevant boxes checked/unchecked), any changes made will be set properly. Thus, WebDrive v5.2 is not a useful tool for checking permissions, and should only be used to adjust/set permissions, if at all. This is fixed in newer versions of WebDrive.
NOTE: WebDrive v5.2 also does not fully (or properly) support automatic file permissions via its "File Attributes" tab, contrary to what the "Permissions" section may lead you to believe. One key issue is the inability to set permissions of files/folders with spaces in the name. Unless changing permissions on one file at a time is acceptable, we recommend that you consider upgrading to WebDrive v8.x (which also requires Windows 2000/XP/Vista).
